Looking for a cat name with a theme? This list has more than 850 themed cat names in eight groups: movies and TV, Star Wars, Christmas, witches and magic, goddesses, food, names for pairs of cats, and names that are simply cool. Many names come with a short note on where they are from or what they mean. It is part of our cat names collection.
Our quick take: a themed name works best when you will still enjoy saying it in ten years, so pick the theme you love and not the one that is in fashion. Long names are fine if they shorten to an easy nickname (Mr. Mistoffelees becomes Misto, Obi-Wan becomes Obi). We checked the film titles and years, the myths and the name meanings, and left out the claims we could not confirm. A 2019 study in the journal Scientific Reports found that pet cats can tell their own name apart from other words, so say the name often and use it at mealtimes.
Themed cat names: quick guide

Cat names from movies and TV

The names below are real screen cats (and a few big cats), with the film or show and the year so you can look them up. For a whole list of Disney characters, see our Disney cat names.

Christmas cat names
A kitten who arrives in December, or a cat who was born then, suits a Christmas name. Iceland even has a Christmas cat of its own: the Yule Cat, a huge cat of folklore said to eat anyone who has not been given new clothes by Christmas Eve.
A safety note for the season. Cats and Christmas decorations do not mix well. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that tinsel and ribbon can block a cat's intestines if swallowed. The ASPCA lists mistletoe and holly as toxic to cats. Poinsettia is listed as toxic too, although the ASPCA says it is “generally over-rated in toxicity”: it irritates the mouth and stomach and sometimes causes vomiting. Lilies in a bouquet are far more dangerous, because they can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat eats any of these, call your vet. We have more tips in how to keep cats away from the Christmas tree.

Witchy cat names
Cats and magic have gone together in stories for centuries. In Scottish folklore the cat-sìth was a fairy creature that looked like a large black cat with a white spot on its chest, and some tales said it was really a witch who could turn into a cat nine times. On Samhain, the old Gaelic festival that begins on the evening of October 31, people left out a saucer of milk for it to bring the house good luck. English witch-trial records of the 1600s are full of named “familiars”, and those odd old names (you will find several below) make wonderful cat names today.
Black cats are the stars of this theme: the Queen of Wands tarot card shows one sitting at the queen's feet. If your witchy cat is black, see our black cat names too, and for the spooky season try our Halloween cat names. Black cats even have their own days: Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17 and, in the UK, National Black Cat Day on October 27.

Goddess cat names
Several goddesses really are cat goddesses. In ancient Egypt, Bastet was shown as a cat or a cat-headed woman, and the lioness goddesses Sekhmet and Pakhet (whose name means “she who scratches”) were her fiercer cousins. The Greeks linked Bastet with their own Artemis and called her Ailuros, from the Greek word for cat. In Norse myth Freyja rides in a chariot pulled by two cats. The old sources never name them: the names Bygul and Trjegul that you may see online are modern. In Bengal the goddess Shashthi, a protector of children, rides a cat. And in Ovid's Metamorphoses, when the Greek gods hid from the monster Typhon in animal form, it was Diana (Artemis) who became a cat. For more names from Egypt, see the Egyptian cat names in our world list.

Food names for cats
If you have ever told your cat “you are so cute I could eat you up”, a food name makes sense. Food names are short, friendly and easy to match to a coat: Pumpkin, Cheddar or Nacho for an orange cat, Oreo or Pepper for a black-and-white one, Mocha or Peanut for a brown tabby, Coconut or Tofu for a white cat.
The name is safe, but the food may not be. Several foods in this list should never be fed to a cat. The ASPCA warns against chocolate, coffee and anything with caffeine, alcohol, onions, garlic and chives, grapes and raisins, and the sweetener xylitol. So call your cat Mocha or Merlot, but keep the real thing out of reach. Our guides to foods that are toxic to cats and what cats can and cannot eat have the details.

Twin cat names: names for pairs of cats
Bringing home two kittens means choosing two names that belong together. Kittens from the same litter are brothers and sisters, not identical twins, and as Cats Protection points out, the kittens in one litter can even have different fathers. Whether your two are littermates or simply a bonded pair, a matching set of names is half the fun.
One tip before you choose: pick two names that sound clearly different. In the 2019 Scientific Reports study, cats living in ordinary homes could tell their own name from the names of the other cats they lived with, and that is easier for them with Salt and Pepper than with Mimi and Mini. For sibling names from one film, look at the Star Wars section (Luke and Leia are twins) and at our Aristocats names. Our unisex cat names help if you do not know yet whether you have boys or girls.

Cool cat names
“Cool cat” started out as jazz talk. By the early 1930s “cat” was slang for a jazz fan, “cool” became the word of approval in the late 1940s, and Miles Davis's album Birth of the Cool came out in 1957. So the coolest cat names of all may be the names of jazz players. After those come rock stars, the cats of famous people, queens, kings, heroes and a few fast cars.
Some very cool people were cat people. Ernest Hemingway's house in Key West is still home to about 60 six-toed cats, many of them descended from Snow White, a cat given to him by a ship's captain. Mark Twain gave his cats names such as Bambino, Sour Mash and Blatherskite. Freddie Mercury wrote the Queen song “Delilah” for his favorite cat. How to choose a themed cat name
Say the name out loud a few times, the way you would call it across the garden at night. If it is long, decide on the nickname now, because that is the name your cat will hear most. With two or more cats, choose names that sound different from each other. And wait a few days before you settle: a kitten you planned to call Vader may turn out to be a Marshmallow. Once you have chosen, use the name at mealtimes and during play so your cat links it with good things.
