The quest for the best pet food brand for our cats seems to never end. Cats are finicky, don’t drink enough water, and just hard to please at times. While on this continuous search for the right cat food products, we have decided to create this Weruva cat food review.
The Weruva pet food brand is a family-owned company founded by David and Stacie Forman in 2006. After searching for the best food for their three rescued cats, Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa, the couple concluded that the best cat food brand that they found was just not good enough. They decided to develop their own recipes using quality ingredients.
Weruva cat food aims to feed pets the way we feed ourselves. The cat food is handmade and species-appropriate. Their products are made in a facility that also makes human food. The poultry, meat, and fish that go into their cat food are hand-picked off the bone.
According to their website, they use the same ingredients that go into human food products. However, their cat foods are not labeled “human grade”.
Their facility in Thailand is certified by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). BRC has one of the highest standards in pet and human food product processing.
What’s in Weruva?
Weruva promises that each one of their products have these qualities:

Weruva Cat is the brand’s line of original cat food recipes. Made with real visible ingredients, this product has boneless, skinless, chicken breast meat and fish loins among other protein sources.
They also offer chicken free or fish free recipes for cats with food allergies. Weruva Cat is divided into 3 types according to texture: Weruva Classic Cat, Weruva Cat Patés, and Weruva Cat Stew.
Weruva Cat Paw Lickin’ Chicken
Weruva Cat Paw Lickin’ Chicken is full of protein. It has shreds of chicken breast and has no fillers, grains, or vegetables. It’s made especially for your picky kitty.
The first five ingredients used are boneless, skinless chicken breast, chicken broth, potato starch, sunflower seed oil, and calcium lactate.
Guaranteed Analysis
Pros
Perfect for cats with fish allergies. This chicken in gravy cat dinner contains no fish products, and many owners of cats with allergies to fish have sworn by it. One review from a cat parent said that her cat has not been taking steroids for her allergies since switching to this product.
Helped resolve urinary tract issues. This wet cat food has received great feedback from owners of cats with urinary problems such as crystals and blockages. According to these customers, their kitty’s issues were gone after feeding them this food exclusively.
Cats with urinary tract issues are usually put on a grain-free diet. It also does not help when cats don’t get enough moisture. As it has around 85% moisture, it provides a good amount of hydration in each can or pouch.
You can also see the shreds of chicken breast in every can, so you know that it is not full of fillers that may cause inflammation in sensitive cats.
Cons
New formula is soupy. The new and improved Paw Lickin’ Chicken may not seem to please several buyers. They find that there is slightly too much liquid in this product. Many would like to see more meat for the price of this cat food. Some comments also state that the liquid is more like soup instead of gravy.
Conclusion
Paw Lickin’ Chicken is highly recommended for cats with many sensitivities such as gluten, grain, and fish sensitivities. The ingredients are very clean, and you can really see and smell the shreds of chicken breast in every can or pouch. It has helped improve the overall health of cats with urinary tract problems, which saved the owners from more vet and medication bills.
However, some Weruva cat food reviews do not agree that the new formula is an improvement. They feel that it is no longer a good value as there is visibly less chicken and more moisture compared to previous formulas.
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen
The Cats in the Kitchen product line is what would happen if cats could cook. This product line features meats from chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, or fish, or combinations these. Cats in the Kitchen is divided into two types: Cats in the Kitchen Originals and Cats in the Kitchen Patés.
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen – Cat to the Future
Cats in the Kitchen Patés are adorably named after famous 80’s movies. They have a creamy paté texture that you may slide and serve right out of the pouch.
This cat food variant is described as a chicken and salmon dinner in a hydrating puree. The first five ingredients are chicken broth, chicken, tuna, salmon, and natural flavor.
Guaranteed Analysis
Pros
Cats love it! Cat to the Future seems to be a favorite among many felines. It is especially liked by those who cannot be bothered with flakes or chunks of meat. Kitties gobble up this smooth paté and beg for more.
No more puking. Some cat parents’ food reviews stated that their pets are able to keep Cat to the Future down. This texture is perfect for those who have sensitive stomachs. It is not only easy to chew, but also highly digestible.
Cons
Salmon is only fourth. A few customers have commented that this product’s label says Chicken and Salmon Dinner, but salmon is just the fourth ingredient. The high protein sources for this wet food is actually chicken, tuna, and salmon.
Conclusion
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Cat to the Future is a not only a good paté style wet food for felines of all ages, but it is a great way to give high quality protein to those with sensitive stomachs. As the meat are pureed in a lot of liquid, the food is very easy to digest even for cats prone to vomiting.
However, as much as salmon is highlighted in the label of this wet cat food, it is only the third protein next to chicken and tuna. Kitties don’t seem to mind though.
Best Friend Foods (B.F.F.)
Best Friend Foods is also known as Best Feline Friend. It is Weruva’s high protein, low in fat line of wet cat food. It features red meat tuna, chicken, turkey, tilapia, and other sources of protein.
B.F.F. is divided into three types: B.F.F. Originals which features minced meat, B.F.F. OMG (Oh My Gravy!), B.F.F. PLAY (Paté Lovers Aw Yeah!). With such catchy, funny names, who can resist buying these for kitties at least once?
Weruva B.F.F. OMG (Oh My Gravy!) Tuna and Beef Baby Cakes
B.F.F. OMG in Tuna and Beef Baby Cakes cat food is rich in protein and healthy fats, has minimal carbs, and has lots of hydration. It is free from grain, gluten, and carrageenan.
This tuna and beef meal is also dolphin-safe, just like all other Weruva products that contain fish. The first five ingredients are tuna broth, tuna, beef, tapioca starch, and sunflower oil.
Guaranteed Analysis
Pros
It’s all about the gravy. Cats can’t get enough of the gravy in this B.F.F. OMG. It is made super flavorful with tuna broth, and bits of tuna and beef. Kitties enjoy licking the delectable sauce. It is not only tasty, but packed with nutrients as well. It’s the perfect way to get your cats to take in more moisture.
No carrageenan. Many customers who bought this variant love the fact that it does not have carrageenan. Carrageenan may cause inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease in cats. It is commonly used as an additive in wet pet food.
Cons
The pouch. Cat parents are having a hard time getting all of the precious meat bits out of the pouch. A few complain that they need to get a spoon to scoop all the meat chunks out, while some like to add a bit of water and swish it around in the pouch for an extra serving of sauce.
Conclusion
Weruva B.F.F. OMG in Tuna and Beef Baby Cakes is a great lickable treat for kitties. There is no question about the quality of the tuna and beef that goes into it. The meat chunks are visible so you know that it really is filler free. The gravy is the highlight of this wet food. Cats love it and it enables them to stay hydrated. It can be given as a meal or as a topper for dry food.
The only issue most customers have with this product is the pouch that it comes in. Several customers find it inconvenient, and hard to get all of the food out.
Weruva TruLuxe
Weruva TruLuxe is the brand’s premium line of cat food products. It features meat such as Australian grass-fed beef, basa, Japanese mackerel, and others. It ensures high-quality ingredients that are visible in every can. This is cat gourmet at its finest.
Weruva TruLuxe Glam ‘N Punk with Lamb and Duck in Gelée
Weruva Glam ‘N Punk with Lamb and Duck in Gelée is made with boneless lamb muscle meat and boneless, skinless duck breast. This product is definitely premium dinner for your cat.
It is especially made for carnivores and comes with a broth-based jelly that cats love. The first five ingredients are water sufficient for processing, lamb, tuna, boneless, skinless duck breast, and locust bean gum.
Guaranteed Analysis
Pros
Great flavor and texture. Glam ‘N Punk is a flavor that proves to be popular with cats. The protein sources are actually lamb, tuna, and duck. The texture is similar to a paté, and cats who prefer softer textures love this variant. It is the only TruLuxe product that comes in gelée.
Great for cats sensitive to chicken. As Glam’ N Punk contains no chicken or chicken broth, it is a great choice for kitties who are allergic to chicken. However, the second protein source is tuna. So this might not be a good choice for those with fish allergies.
Cons
Fishy odor. According to several reviews, this lamb and duck product smells a bit too strongly of fish. While it does include tuna as its second protein source, some may not be aware that it has fish as the flavor says “lamb and duck”. The flavor Lamb and Duck in Gelée had some cat parents confused as they did not realize that tuna is one of the ingredients.
Conclusion
Weruva TruLuxe Glam ‘N Punk is rich in high-quality protein from grass-fed lamb, as well as tuna, and skinless, boneless duck breast. While packed with a lot of meat, it comes in a soft texture similar to a paté. This is especially good for cats who don’t like big chunks of meat in their food. The broth-based jelly is also a great way for cats to stay hydrated.
While good for kitties who cannot have chicken in their diets, it is not fish-free as some may have thought. This is also why it has a fishy smell.
Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up
Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up is a food supplement made for both cats and dogs. It is full of healthy fiber for digestive health. It contains only pureed pumpkin and water.
Pumpkin is a good source of soluble and insoluble fibers. It can be served as a light snack, treat, or as a dry food topper. Pumpkin Patch Up comes in 1.05 oz and 2.8 oz pouches.
Guaranteed Analysis
Pros
Promotes healthy digestion. This product’s fiber-rich puree helps constipated kitties’ digestive system to get moving. It also improves the stool quality of those who have been having loose bowels. Veterinarians actually recommend pumpkin to constipated pets. Pumpkin Patch Up has received good feedback from owners of many pets who were previously having various digestive problems.
Versatile. Pumpkin Patch Up may be given to pets as a treat, light snack, mixed with wet food, or as dry cat food topper.
Cons
Watery. Some buyers find Pumpkin Patch Up a bit too runny and watery. For its price, several customers may feel that it is not a good value, especially as there are other ways to incorporate pumpkin in your cat’s diet.
Conclusion
Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up is a good source of fiber for your pets. It has worked wonders for many cats and dogs who were previously suffering from digestive problems such as constipation, IBS, vomiting, etc.
However, some feel that this Weruva product is too expensive. A few recent purchase reviews state that the product they each received is too runny.
According to a review, the customer resorted to buying baby food brand Gerber or canned pumpkin puree instead.
Have Weruva cat foods ever been recalled?
Yes. In 2017, Some Best Feline Friend (B.F.F.) products that were recalled by Weruva due to insufficient levels of thiamine. The recall was done for some of B.F.F.’s products that were made exclusively for the Australian market. No incident has been reported since.
Summary
There is no question that Weruva is one of cat food brands that have the cleanest ingredient list. The protein sources are hand-picked off the bone. The poultry used are skinless and boneless chicken or duck breast meat. All Weruva products are free from grain and gluten. Some are even carrageenan-free.
The packaging are also very attractive. With colorful labels and catchy names, they are sure to make you look and want to buy for your kitty. They have extensive product selections that we are sure you would be able to find at least a couple that your cat likes. They have great options for cats with food sensitivities as well, such as fish-free or chicken-free foods.
Some say that cats base their food preference on texture. Weruva has different kinds of textures in various combinations of protein. This is definitely a plus for parents of extra finicky cats.
While many may find this pet food brand a bit expensive, other Weruva cat food reviews state that most of their food are worth the price for its quality. Your cat gets protein form visible pieces of meat and veggies without the addition of harmful fillers or preservatives.
Overall, most of their variants are highly recommended as far as ingredient, quality, flavors, textures, and health benefits are concerned. As with most things, you pay a premium for high quality.
Some Weruva variants offer more value than others. But we think that the value of any cat food is heavily influenced by our kitties’ taste buds.
