Open Farm Cat Food Review

If Iโ€™m going to spend more on cat food, I want more than a pretty ingredient list. I want to know where the meat came from, how it was raised, whether the recipe actually provides species-appropriate nutrition, and whether the brand is doing anything meaningful beyond marketing.

Thatโ€™s where Open Farm caught my attention.

In this Open Farm cat food review, Iโ€™m looking beyond the buzzwords to examine its protein sources, ingredient quality, animal-welfare standards, sustainability efforts, traceability, recall history, and how the food compares with traditional pet-food brands.

My short verdict: Open Farm is one of the more transparent premium cat-food brands Iโ€™ve evaluated. Its biggest strengths are traceable ingredients, animal-welfare certifications, high-quality animal proteins, several grain-free options, and a genuine effort to reduce environmental impact. The main drawbacks are the premium price, the fact that not every recipe is grain-free, and the need to choose formulas carefully if your cat has a specific food allergy.

Final Score: 9.1/10

What Is Open Farm Cat Food?

Open Farm is a premium pet-food company founded in 2014 around four major principles: animal welfare, nutrition, sustainability, and transparency. The company says its sourcing philosophy was created in response to the lack of ethically sourced pet food available at the time.

The brand now offers several cat-food formats, including:

  • Dry kibble
  • RawMix kibble with freeze-dried raw components
  • Wet patรฉs
  • Rustic Blend wet food
  • Freeze-dried raw food
  • Fish toppers and other meal additions

One thing I particularly like is that Open Farm doesn't treat “premium” as simply meaning exotic ingredients. Its emphasis is on where the ingredients come from and how they're produced.

For example, its turkey and chicken dry recipe uses Global Animal Partnership-certified poultry, while its salmon recipes use wild-caught Pacific salmon recommended by Ocean Wise.

Ingredients: What Stands Out?

Turkey

Turkey is one of the brand's prominent poultry proteins. It provides highly digestible animal protein and essential amino acids needed for maintaining lean muscle.

I particularly like turkey as an alternative to chicken for cats that don't tolerate chicken well. However, I would always check the complete ingredient list rather than assuming a “turkey” recipe is completely poultry-free.

Their Homestead Turkey recipes use humanely raised turkey and the wet version combines turkey with turkey bone broth and vegetables.

Chicken

Chicken is another major protein source across the Open Farm range.

Its appeal is straightforward: chicken supplies concentrated animal protein and essential amino acids while generally being highly palatable to cats.

Their chicken is sourced from farms participating in animal-welfare standards. One example is its G.A.P.-certified chicken, which is raised with additional space and environmental enrichment and without antibiotics.

The downside? Chicken is one of the more common proteins used in cat food, so it isn't necessarily the best choice for a cat with a diagnosed chicken allergy.

Salmon

Salmon is one of my favorite proteins from a nutritional perspective.

It provides:

  • High-quality animal protein
  • EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids
  • Support for normal skin and coat health
  • A highly palatable option for many cats

The company's wild-caught Pacific salmon is Ocean Wise recommended, and the company highlights its omega-3 content for skin and coat support.

This is where I think Open Farm's sustainability angle becomes particularly meaningful: the company isn't simply saying “salmon is good.” It provides information about how and where that salmon is sourced.

Showing the kibble size and texture straight from the bag

Whitefish

Whitefish provides another animal-based protein option, particularly useful for pet parents trying to rotate away from poultry.

Their Wild Ocean RawMix combines wild-caught whitefish, salmon and rockfish, with the seafood sourced according to Ocean Wise recommendations.

For cats that enjoy fish, this can be an appealing option. However, cats with known fish sensitivities obviously need a different protein source.

Lamb

Lamb is one of the proteins I would consider when looking for an alternative to the more common chicken-based recipes.

The pasture-raised lamb recipe uses New Zealand lamb and includes nutrient-rich liver. The company also describes this recipe as a good option for cats with sensitive stomachs and notes its lower allergenicity compared with some common proteins.

I would still be careful with the word “hypoallergenic.” Lamb isn't automatically hypoallergenic, and any animal protein can potentially trigger an adverse food reaction.

Beef

Beef provides another dense source of animal protein and can be useful for cats that enjoy richer meat flavors.

Their Grass-Fed Beef Rustic Blend combines pasture-raised, grass-fed beef with beef bone broth and vegetables. The recipe uses human-grade ingredients and can be fed as a complete and balanced meal.

For cats that don't do well with poultry or simply prefer red meat, beef gives owners another option.

What Does “Ethically Sourced” Actually Mean?

This is one of the areas where I think Open Farm deserves more credit than brands that simply put a picture of a happy farm animal on the packaging.

Open Farm says its meat ingredients are sourced from farms that meet animal-welfare standards and that third-party certifications are used to audit parts of its supply chain. Its poultry sourcing, for example, includes Global Animal Partnership standards.

For seafood, the company uses Ocean Wise-recommended sources for several recipes. Its Wild Ocean RawMix, for example, uses fishing practices intended to reduce bycatch and protect marine habitats.

Why Does This Matter Nutritionally?

Ethical sourcing and nutritional quality aren't exactly the same thing.

A humanely raised chicken isn't automatically more nutritious than every conventionally raised chicken. What I appreciate about them is that it connects sourcing transparency with ingredient quality, rather than pretending sustainability itself is a nutrient.

For me, the real benefit is knowing more about what I'm buying.

The “better option” isn't simply:

Ethical = automatically healthier.

It's more accurately:

Transparent sourcing + appropriate animal protein + complete and balanced formulation + responsible production = a more informed buying decision.

Is the Brand Actually Species-Appropriate?

Cats are obligate carnivores, so I pay particular attention to the animal-protein component of any food I review.

Open Farm offers several high-protein recipes, including RawMix formulas. For example, the Open Prairie RawMix recipe lists a minimum of 38% crude protein and is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Its Wild Ocean RawMix similarly combines multiple fish proteins with freeze-dried raw components and is formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional profiles for all life stages.

That said, I wouldn't judge a cat food simply by looking at its protein percentage.

I also want to know:

  • Where the protein comes from
  • Whether the recipe is complete and balanced
  • Whether essential nutrients such as taurine are provided
  • Whether the food fits the cat's life stage
  • How much moisture the cat consumes
  • Whether the cat actually tolerates and enjoys the recipe

What Results Can You Expect?

When I evaluate a premium cat food, I'm less interested in marketing claims and more interested in the practical changes pet parents may notice.

Coat Shine

Recipes containing salmon and salmon oil provide omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, which support normal skin and coat health. The brand specifically highlights these benefits in its wild-caught salmon recipe.

A shinier coat can be one of the visible improvements after a nutritionally appropriate diet, although coat condition can also be affected by grooming, genetics, parasites, hydration and underlying health conditions.

Energy Levels

Adequate protein and calories are essential for maintaining muscle and normal activity.

A cat eating an appropriate amount of a complete and balanced food may maintain better muscle condition and normal energy. However, I wouldn't promise that this product will automatically make a sluggish cat energetic.

If a cat has persistently low energy, that's a veterinary issue rather than something to solve by simply switching foods.

Allergy Reduction

This is where protein selection matters most.

If a cat has a true food allergy, changing to a protein it hasn't previously reacted to may help reduce food-related symptoms. Open Farm provides alternative proteins such as lamb and chicken-free fish recipes, which gives owners more choices.

But I would not call it an allergy treatment.

For a cat with a confirmed food allergy, I would choose a formula based on the veterinarian's elimination-diet recommendations rather than simply choosing the most exotic protein.

Open Farm vs. Traditional Leading Cat Food Brands

So, is it actually better than the big traditional brands?

My answer is: better in some ways, but not automatically better for every cat.

CategoryOpen FarmTraditional Leading Brands
Ingredient traceabilityExcellentUsually more limited
Animal-welfare sourcingMajor focusVaries considerably
Sustainable seafoodStrong emphasisVaries by formula

Grain-inclusive choicesYesYes

Where I think Open Farm wins is transparency and ethical sourcing.

Where traditional veterinary-oriented brands can have an advantage is specialized nutrition for cats with diagnosed medical conditions.

So I wouldn't automatically replace a veterinarian-recommended therapeutic diet with this one just because it has prettier ingredients.

A closer look at the Open Farm packaging with my cat

Product History & Recall Record

Open Farm was founded in 2014 and built its identity around ethical sourcing, animal welfare, sustainability and transparency.

Have They Been Recalled?

I could not find an FDA recall listing for Open Farm cat food in the sources I checked for this review. I would still recommend checking the FDA's current recall database before publishing or updating this section because recall information can change over time.

I also wouldn't interpret “no recall found” as a guarantee that a product is risk-free. Manufacturing controls, storage, handling and individual lots still matter.

One of their strengths here is its lot-level transparency. The company says customers can use the lot code on the package to access ingredient origins, safety testing information, certification details, and other product information.

That is a feature I genuinely appreciate because it makes the supply chain easier to investigate.

Is This Food Sustainable?

Yes, Open Farm has made sustainability a central part of its business, but no animal-based pet food is environmentally impact-free.

This distinction is important.

Open Farm publishes estimated carbon footprints for individual recipes. For example, its Open Prairie RawMix lists a screening-level carbon footprint of 1.02 kg CO2e per pound, while its Goodbowl Harvest Chicken & Brown Rice recipe lists 0.77 kg CO2e per pound.

The company has also committed to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and has announced a goal supporting the transition of 1 million acres of farmland toward regenerative management.

Open Farm also partnered with TerraCycle on pet-food bag recycling and provides recycling instructions on its packaging.

What Does 100% Traceable Actually Mean?

This is probably my favorite feature.

Their system allows pet parents to enter the lot code from the package and see information about the geographic origins of ingredients.

In practical terms, that means you aren't just reading:

“salmon”

You're getting substantially more information about where that salmon came from and how it was sourced.

That's a meaningful difference.

Who Should Use This?

I think Open Farm is particularly worth considering for:

  • Pet parents who prioritize ingredient transparency
  • Cats that do well on premium, high-protein diets
  • Owners looking for animal-welfare-certified meat
  • Cats that need alternative proteins
  • Pet parents interested in grain-free formulas
  • Owners who want wet food made with human-grade ingredients
  • Cats that enjoy fish, poultry, lamb, or beef
  • Environmentally conscious pet parents who want more information about a food's carbon footprint
  • Owners who are willing to pay more for sourcing and transparency

Who Might Want Another Brand?

I would consider alternatives if:

  • Your cat needs a veterinary therapeutic diet
  • Your budget is very tight
  • Your cat refuses premium foods
  • Your veterinarian recommends a specific nutritional formulation
  • Your cat has multiple confirmed food allergies requiring an extremely controlled diet

My Take on Their 2 Lines

Wet Food

The wet-food range is particularly interesting because some recipes use 100% human-grade ingredients and are designed to be served as complete and balanced meals.

For example, the Harvest Chicken Rustic Blend uses fresh chicken, human-grade ingredients and no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

The Salmon Rustic Blend similarly uses wild-caught salmon and human-grade ingredients.

I also like that wet foods can increase dietary moisture, which is especially useful for cats that don't naturally drink much water.

RawMix

RawMix is probably the most interesting part of the brand for pet parents looking for something beyond conventional kibble.

The concept combines kibble with a bone-broth coating and freeze-dried raw components. The Open Prairie formula, for example, includes chicken and turkey freeze-dried raw pieces and animal-welfare-certified poultry.

The Wild Ocean recipe takes a similar approach with wild-caught whitefish, salmon, and rockfish.

However, I wouldn't assume that “raw” automatically means healthier.

What matters more is whether the finished diet is complete and balanced, nutritionally appropriate, safely produced and well tolerated by your cat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Open Farm cat food grain-free?

Some Open Farm cat foods are grain-free, but not all of them.

The RawMix range includes grain-free recipes such as Open Prairie and Wild Ocean. However, Open Farm also offers grain-inclusive recipes such as Goodbowl Harvest Chicken & Brown Rice.

Always check the specific recipe rather than assuming the entire brand is grain-free.

Is Open Farm considered human-grade dog food?

Some Open Farm dog and cat foods use human-grade ingredients, but “human-grade” does not apply automatically to every Open Farm product.

For example, the brand specifically identifies some wet recipes as containing 100% human-grade ingredients and being produced in a human-grade facility.

For this reason, I would check the exact product label rather than describing the entire Open Farm range as human-grade.

Is Open Farm environmentally sustainable?

Open Farm is one of the more environmentally transparent pet-food brands, but no animal-based pet food has zero environmental impact.

The company publishes estimated carbon footprints for individual products, uses sustainability standards for some seafood, provides packaging-recycling information, and has announced greenhouse-gas reduction and regenerative-agriculture commitments.

What I appreciate most is that Open Farm gives consumers actual information rather than asking them to simply trust a “sustainable” label.

Is Open Farm good for sensitive stomachs?

It can be a good option for some cats with sensitive stomachs, particularly when the right protein and formula are selected.

They offer alternative proteins such as lamb and fish and several recipes without artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. The company specifically recommends certain RawMix formulas for sensitive stomachs.

However, sensitive digestion is different from a diagnosed food allergy. Cats with persistent vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss or suspected food allergies should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Is Open Farm good cat food?

Yes, I consider Open Farm a high-quality premium cat-food brand, particularly for owners who value traceability, animal welfare, and ingredient sourcing.

Its recipes offer substantial animal-protein variety, complete-and-balanced options, grain-free formulas, wet foods and RawMix choices.

Is Open Farm worth the price?

For the right pet parent, I think it can be.

You're paying not only for the food itself but also for the brand's sourcing standards, certifications, traceability system, and sustainability initiatives.

Whether those extras are worth the premium depends on your cat, budget and priorities.

Open Farm Cat Food Review: Ethical, Traceable Nutrition or Just a Premium Price Tag? 12

Final Verdict: Is It Worth Buying?

After looking at the ingredients, protein sources, sourcing policies, sustainability initiatives, product formats, and transparency, Open Farm earns a 9.1/10 from me.

The strongest reason I'd recommend it isn't simply that the ingredient list looks impressive.

It's the fact that it gives pet parents considerably more information about where those ingredients came from and how they're sourced.

Its turkey, chicken, salmon, whitefish, lamb and beef options provide plenty of protein variety. Its wet foods offer human-grade ingredient options, while RawMix gives owners a higher-protein alternative to conventional kibble.

And the sustainability story is more substantial than a simple “eco-friendly” claim: It openly publishes product-level carbon estimates, promotes animal-welfare certifications, uses sustainability standards for seafood, supports regenerative agriculture and provides recycling pathways for its packaging.

But here's my bottom line: I wouldn't choose Open Farm solely because it's ethical or sustainable. I'd choose the specific recipe that matches my cat's nutritional needs, protein tolerances, life stage, preferences and budget.

For pet parents who want premium nutrition without completely ignoring where their pet's food comes from, that's where this becomes particularly compelling.

And honestly, being able to scan a bag and ask, “Where did this ingredient actually come from?” is something I wish more cat-food companies offered.
