2022 Friskies Cat Food Review: Tasty & Flavorful Meals
Friskies has been a household cat food name for decades. Launched in the 1930s, the pet food brand has worked its way to the top tier of the global cat food market share.
But does Friskies have the right food for your cat? To help you decide, we have created this 2022 Friskies cat food review of some of their best-selling products available on Chewy.com.
Initially launched as a dog food brand, Carnation introduced Friskies in 1934. The food brand made dry food for puppies and cats in the 1950s. However, puppy food did not appeal to cats.

A sales manager names Henry Arnest suggested that Friskies make dry food specifically for cats. It was considered a “nutty idea” at the time. A market trial was launched and the Friskies dry cat food was sold successfully, to the company’s executives’ surprise.
Fast forward to 1992, Friskies had market share of 28.2%. Not bad at all for such a nutty idea. The brand is currently owned by pet food giant, Nestle Purina Petcare.
Friskies offers both wet and dry cat foods. Their dry foods are divided into 3 product lines, while their wet cat food have 11 products lines with different flavors and textures. The brand also offers meal toppers and treats. You are sure to find one that your cat will love!

Friskies Surfin' & Turfin' Favorites is a very tasty kibble that cats just love. It is liked even by known fussy kitties. It is also quite affordable, which makes it the brand of choice for many multiple cat households. However, a select few find the kibble pieces slightly too large.

Crazy for gravy. Another hit among kitties, Friskies Gravy Swirlers is just something cats cannot get enough of. They come running when they hear the bag being opened. This product is truly a crowd-pleaser. Some even give them as treats.
No bad odor. Some cat foods do have certain smells that are not so appealing to cat parents. This product from Friskies does not have a strong, overpowering scent. It makes mealtimes pleasant for cat owners.
Food dye. According to a few cat food reviews, they prefer that cat food do not have any artificial dyes in it. This product does contain artificial food color, which isn’t really beneficial to cats.
Friskies Gravy Swirlers® Adult offers tasty gravy-coated kibbles that a lot of kitties love. The gravy baked right in each piece of kibble makes a big difference as far as flavor is concerned. Cats enjoy their meals and even have these as treats. This definitely makes kitties happy. However, some cat parents do not appreciate the fact that it contains artificial food color.
3. Friskies Indoor Delights®
Friskies Indoor Delights® is specially formulated for the nutritional needs of indoor kitties. Each crunchy kibble is packed with the flavors of chicken, salmon, cheese, and garden greens.
It has an added fiber blend in its ingredients that helps control hairballs in indoor cats. This dry food has antioxidants to help support a healthy immune system. It also has vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, vitamin A, and ferrous sulfate among others.
The first five ingredients of this indoor recipe are ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, and beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols.
Gentle on sensitive tummies. According to food reviews from cat parents of some cats with sensitive stomachs, Friskies Indoor Delights has been quite gentle on the cats’ tummies. They are able to keep this food down. Cats who were previously vomiting have thrived well on this product.
Good for maintaining healthy weights. Indoor cats are les active than their outdoorsy counterparts. This makes them more likely to gain excess weight. According to cat food reviews, many cats have been able to maintain healthy weights with this Friskies product. They feel fuller for longer, and do not feel the need to overeat.
Corn. The first two ingredients of this food are ground yellow corn and corn gluten meal. These are ingredients that not many cat parents would like to see before actual animal protein.
Friskies Indoor Delights® is worth a try for indoor kitties who are quite picky with food, or in need of weight control. The cats seem fuller for longer, and do not gorge on their food. Aside from being tasty, this dry food has been proven gentle on many sensitive cats’ stomachs. No more vomiting for these kitties after they have been switched to this product.
However, the main ingredients of this cat food are not animal protein, which some take as an indication of lower quality. Despite the amount of such ingredients in this product, many have seen an improvement in their indoor cats’ weights.
4. Friskies Tender & Crunchy Combo
This Friskies line is an excellent way to incorporate different textures into your feline’s diet. Part tender and part crunchy, the kibbles provide cats an interesting and tasty meal experience.
It contains flavors of beef, chicken, and turkey to entice meat-loving kitties to chow down. It’s a complete diet for adult cats, loaded with plenty of vitamins and minerals to meet all of their daily needs.
The first five ingredients of this Tender & Crunchy Combo are ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, ground wheat, soybean meal.
Packed with essential nutrients. The food has guaranteed levels of omega fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin E, and more. The nutrients are not simply listed down in the list of ingredients, plenty are also mentioned in the label with their respective minimum and max content.
Meaty feast. Has more than one meat flavor to keep the flavor interesting.
Doesn’t start with meat. The recipe begins with yellow corn and only has one meat product within the first five ingredients.
Meats are not named. There are meat ingredients in the meal that are not named (meat and bone meal), while those that are named are byproducts.
With regards to taste, it seems that Friskies has captured the taste of cats. Many kitties love the flavors present in this Tender & Crunchy Combo, and the texture keeps them hooked.
Quality-wise, however, Friskies has a lot of catching up to do. There aren’t many quality meat ingredients anywhere in the list. To be specific, there is only one and that is chicken. The other ones included are byproducts or unnamed meats.
While we are fine with meals, those are usually named. For example, chicken meal is alright since you, as the pet owner, know where the food comes from.
But with unnamed meat ingredients, like the meat and bone meal mentioned in the labels, you are not informed exactly what animal contributed the meat.
So if you’re looking for a high-quality recipe, this Friskies formula is not it. But if all you need is food that is affordable and which your cat will like and will give him all of his nutritional needs, then this recipe is for you.
5. Friskies Seafood Sensations
Seafood Sensations brings cats the whisker-licking flavor of salmon, tuna, and shrimp in every bite. The crunchy kibbles also contain a touch of seaweed to complete their seafood feast.
The recipe is designed to offer a balanced nutrition for cats of all life stages. It is formulated to support immune health and is loaded with antioxidants for overall well-being.
The first five ingredients of this recipe are ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, poultry-byproduct meal, soybean meal, and animal fat preserved with mixed tocopherols.
Lots of protein. Contains 30 % minimum crude protein for maximum muscle development.
Guaranteed levels of nutrients. The recipe has listed values for calcium, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin E, taurine, linoleic acid, phosphorus, and arachidonic acid.
Very little seafood content. The seafood ingredients don’t appear until midway through the list of ingredients.
Meat is not the first ingredient. This food starts with ground yellow corn. The meat ingredient does not appear until the third slot and there’s no more meat again until the 7th.
This formulation is supposed to deliver seafood flavors to your furry companions. While it does succeed in giving your kitties a taste of the sea, the real seafood content leaves much to be desired.
There are no seafood ingredients in the first five. The only meat product is poultry by-product meal. The second meat to appear is also unrecognizable since it is unnamed (meat and bone meal).
The seafood (ocean fish meal) only appears in the 8th slot. The rest are in the 14th (salmon meal), 15th (tuna meal), and 16th (shrimp meal) slots — in the middle of the list and just before the nutrients, so we know how miniscule the amounts actually are.
Certainly, the guaranteed levels of nutrition are attractive. The affordable price is also a big draw, and most cats do love the taste. If those three mentioned are your biggest concerns, then Friskies Seafood Sensations may be the ideal food for your feline buddy.
6. Friskies Farm Favorites with Natural Chicken
Friskies Farm Favorites is a recipe that promotes a healthy skin and coat. The draw of this range is that it contains no artificial colors or preservatives. It also features natural and farm-raised chicken to entice your poultry-loving feline friends to eat.
Made with a crunchy texture, the kibbles satisfy cats’ need to chew and help keep their teeth clean.
This recipe’s first five ingredients are ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, and ground wheat.
Fresh chicken. This recipe contains farm-raised, fresh chicken. Along with wholesome carrots and spinach.
No artificial colors or preservatives. The formulation strives to keep it as natural as possible by refraining from using non-natural ingredients to give the food its color or to preserve it.
Fresh chicken volume is not significant. The fresh chicken doesn’t appear in the list until the 7th slot. The chicken ingredient that occupies more volume in the food is a by-product meal.
This formulation combines wholesome veggies with protein-rich poultry to provide your cat with a healthy immune system, skin, and coat. It also offers a 100% balanced and complete nutrition for kitties.
The price range is a big plus and worthy of consideration. It also helps that the flavor is trademark Friskies, which means it appeals to most felines. However, the food is not really what you’d consider quality. It does provide all nutritional requirements of adult cats, though.
7. Friskies Ocean Favorites with Natural Salmon
Friskies Ocean Favorites takes felines on a deep sea adventure through their taste buds. The recipe is grain-inclusive and uses brown rice as a carb ingredient. The fish are sourced from Europe, North America, or South America. The brand utilizes both farmed and wild-caught fish for the formulation.
The recipe offers immune support, itch and redness remedy, and muscle care for adult kitties.
The first five ingredients are ground yellow corn, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, soy flour, and ground whole wheat.
Contains brown rice. Brown rice is a healthy carbohydrate source and a nutrient-rich food. Brown rice contains more fiber and nutrition than white rice and has a lower glycemic index.
Less artificial ingredients. The recipe is crafted to be more natural, thus skipping over artificial flavors or preservatives, although it has artificial colors.
Fish is not within the first five ingredients. The main ingredient is supposed to be salmon, but it’s not found until the 7th slot. A poultry ingredient (chicken by-product meal) has more volume than the salmon, which is supposed to be the star of the food.
Not meat-based. There are too many corn and grain ingredients, overwhelming the meat products in the recipe.
Contains artificial colors. The recipe uses red 40, blue 2, and yellow 5 dyes to color the food. These may trigger allergies in sensitive cats.
The Ocean Favorites cat food is a hit with many felines with its naturally flavorful taste. It has a good minimum crude protein level of 30% and guaranteed levels of taurine, vitamin E, selenium, arachidonic acids, and linoleic acid.
Cats will get 100% balanced and complete nutrition from this meal, and its use of omega fatty acids ensure that your kitty will get that beautiful skin and coat that he needs.
But if you check the ingredients list, the salmon doesn’t have a significant volume in the food. A whole lot of grains come first before the salmon. In fact, even with the inclusion of a poultry product in the 2nd slot, the total grains here overwhelm the meat content.
1. Friskies Classic Pate Turkey & Giblets Dinner
Friskies Classic Pate Turkey & Giblets Dinner canned cat food is a meaty meal served in sauce. It has real nutritious turkey and giblets.
This paté has taurine for eye and heart health. It is enriched with vitamins and minerals for a complete and balanced meal. This Friskies wet cat food can be served as is or as a meal topper.
The first five ingredients of this turkey and giblets paté are meat by-products, water sufficient for processing, turkey, poultry by-products, and fish.
Tasty, meaty dinner. This turkey and giblets canned food is another product from Friskies that makes numerous cats very excited for dinnertime.
The smooth paté is packed with flavor from turkey, giblets, and fish. It is also high in moisture which makes it a great way to keep your cat hydrated.
Good sized cans. The large cans have been getting rave reviews from many cat owners who feed multiple cats. The size of the big cans are just right for feeding time, especially for those who also feed feral cat colonies.
A bit watery. A few cat food reviews state that the large cans come with patés that are slightly too watery compared to the ones in smaller cans.
Friskies Classic Pate Turkey & Giblets Dinner is another one of the brand’s wet foods that is a hit among cats. They love the rich, meaty flavor of the smooth paté.
This moisture-filled dinner is a great way to keep cats hydrated. The large cans seem to find a lot of fans in multiple cat households. However, a handful of cat owners find the contents of the large cans are more watery than the ones that come in smaller cans.
2. Friskies Savory Shreds with Ocean Whitefish & Tuna
Friskies Savory Shreds with Ocean Whitefish & Tuna is a high-protein food with real tuna and ocean whitefish. The meaty thin, shred texture are served in a rich and tasty sauce.
It has a higher protein content compared to the average wet foods. It also has vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants for a complete and balanced meal. This versatile product can be served as a meal or as a meal-topper.
The first five ingredients of this recipe are water, liver, turkey, wheat gluten & chicken.
High in protein. Friskies Savory Shreds with Ocean Whitefish & Tuna has a higher protein content than the average cat food. It contains real fish, poultry, meat by-products, liver, turkey, chicken & tuna. These ingredients not only give much-needed protein, but it also makes for a very tasty meal.
A favorite among kitties. Yet another Friskies product that even finicky cats love. This rich and meaty recipe gets the cats running when they hear the can being opened. Cat parents just love seeing their pets happily eating their meals.
More meat please. According to a few reviews, they would prefer to have more meat and less sauce in every can.
Friskies Savory Shreds with Ocean Whitefish & Tuna is a wet food that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This makes it perfect for cats in need of weight management.
Made with real tuna, fish, turkey, chicken and liver, this wet food is a hit among cats. They look forward to their meals and lick their bowls clean. However, some cat owners find that it has more sauce and less meat which they don't like.
3. Friskies Extra Gravy Chunky with Chicken in Savory Gravy
Friskies Extra Gravy Chunky with Chicken in Savory Gravy serves up chunks of meaty goodness in thick, rich gravy.
The extra serving of gravy ensures a tasty and hydrating meal. It can be served on its own or as a meal topper. It is formulated with vitamins and mineral for a complete and balanced meal.
The first five ingredients of this chunky chicken recipe are water, chicken, liver, meat by-products, and wheat gluten.
Good gravy! This product for all life stages gives an extra serving of gravy that cats just love. They enjoy licking the hydrating gravy that is rich and full of flavor from chicken, liver, and turkey. Friskies Extra Gravy Chunky with Chicken in Savory Gravy is perfect for kitties who just love lapping up sauce.
No strong odor. Some cat foods are notorious for smelling stronger than what cat owners would prefer. This Friskies wet food does not smell strong at all. It makes serving meals to kitties even more pleasant as there are no strong smells to quickly get away from.
Large chunks. Some kitties find the chunks a bit too large for their liking. They end up eating all of the gravy and leave the chunks in their dishes.
Overall, Friskies Extra Gravy Chunky with Chicken in Savory Gravy makes for a very tasty meal that is highly recommended for gravy lovers.
The extra serving of tasty gravy makes it very popular among cats. Cat parents like that it does not have a strong smell. However, some reviews have notes that the meat chunks are a bit too large for some cats.
4. Friskies Stuf'd & Sauc'd Blast'n Tuna & Simmer'd Sauce
Stuf’d & Sauc’d is a wet cat food that features tuna in a simmered and savory sauce. The meat is grilled first for a more flavorful bite and the meaty morsels are made tender to appeal to senior and little cats who may have trouble chowing down on hard food.
The food comes in a convenient and easy pull-top can to make feeding easier.
Its first five ingredients are water, chicken, meat by-products, wheat gluten, and corn starch-modified.
Plenty of meat. Chicken is the second ingredient followed by meat by-products. There is also tuna somewhere in the list.
Few calories. Each can only contains 148 kcal. If your cat is the lazy, non-active type, the lower calories can help keep them full while maintaining their weight.
Insignificant amount of tuna. The name is misleading since most people will assume tuna is the leading ingredient. However, chicken and an unnamed meat product (meat by-products) are in the lead while tuna is somewhere nearly down the bottom. (It’s almost next to the nutrients and only miniscule amounts of nutrients in a meal are needed to make a difference.
Added color. The food uses added color in the recipe.
Stuf’d & Sauc’d Blast’n with Tuna is crafted with tuna and has that fishy flavor that cats find hard to resist. There’s also a nice texture combination that involves stuf’d bites and tender, meaty morsels of meat to keep mealtimes interesting.
There’s plenty of meat ingredients, although the price is still relatively low. It’s packed with a lot of nutrition and is a complete meal by itself.
However, the use of added color is concerning since cats are not concerned with that. It’s mostly used to make food attractive to pet owners instead. We are also a bit disappointed that there is very little tuna in here, while an unnamed meat product takes up more volume.
5. Friskies Warm'd & Serv'd Grill'd Shrimp in Gravy
Warm’d and Serv’d is a tasty dish that combines grilled meat with a rich and savory gravy for plenty of flavor. Each meal is served in a single-serve pouch for easy feeding and storage.
The wet food is a complete meal containing all of the nutrition your cat needs to enjoy, but you can also add it to his regular dry kibbles to make mealtimes even more interesting.
The first five ingredients are water, meat by-products, chicken, wheat gluten, and shrimp.
Convenient. The pouches are designed in such a way that you can heat the food easily by just dipping the pouches in warm water for two minutes. When the perfect temperature has been reached, a surprise message can be seen across the pouch.
Meat-based. There are a lot of meat content in the food, and three of them can be found in the first five ingredients slots.
By-products. The by-products come first in the ingredients list compared to the fresh meat ingredients. Also, the by-products are unnamed meats, which makes the quality even more doubtful.
The Warm’d & Serv’d pouches makes mealtimes so convenient for feline owners. You only need to dip the pouches in warm water to heat it up, and the pouch itself will inform you through a surprise message when it’s at the proper temperature for feeding.
It contains real shrimp and chicken and these are included within the first five ingredients. There are guaranteed levels of taurine in the recipe along with other (non-guaranteed levels) nutrients like folic acid, biotin, riboflavin, and more.
The only thing we find not exactly to our liking is the meat by-products, which come in second in the label. From which animal/animals are the meats from? And what parts were used? Other than this, this formulation seems to be a good one overall.
6. Friskies Tasty Treasures Pate Liver, Turkey & Chicken
Tasty Treasures Pate is a whisker-licking recipe that’s crafted with real liver bits to entice even the pickiest cat to eat. It’s packed with everything cats need for their daily explorations, from proteins to omegas and antioxidants.
The food comes in an easy-to-eat pate texture that’s great for adult cats, especially ones that have been ill or are still recuperating.
The first five ingredients of the meal are water, liver, meat by-products, fish, and turkey.
Lots of meat proteins. There are seven meat ingredients in the food and four of those are listed in the first five slots.
Contains several quality proteins. There are fresh chicken, fish, and turkey in this recipe.
Unnamed meats. There are meat by-products and poultry-by products included. Again, as we’ve said, quality meats should be named. Otherwise, it must be a mixture of different kinds if they can’t name a specific animal where the meat comes from.
Friskies Tasty Treasures is indeed a tasty treat for our feline friends. The liver bits make it even more so. Ever wonder why many vets prescribe a diet with liver to ailing cats? It’s because liver is highly palatable and enticing to felines.
The food is packed with all the fuel your cat needs to go on his highly active explorations. It is formulated to give nose-to-tail support in every bite.
What gives the food minus points when it comes to rating is the unnamed meat ingredients. We believe premium equals naming each specific ingredient so that pet owners know exactly what their pet is getting.
Everything else seems good, especially the inclusion of three high-quality meat products like chicken, turkey, and fish.
7. Friskies Gravy Sensations Poultry Pouches
The Gravy Sensations Poultry Pouches feature different poultry recipes cooked in rich gravy. For this review, let’s focus on only one of them — Friskies Gravy Sensations with Beef & Chicken in Gravy.
The recipe is a completely balanced meal for indoor cats and kittens and may be fed as a meal on its own or as a tasty topper for your cat’s kibbles. It supports urinary health and is packed with vitamins and minerals for your feline friend’s overall wellbeing.
The first five ingredients are water, liver, beef, wheat gluten, and chicken.
Extra meaty. This recipe contains five types of animal proteins to entice a carnivorous kitty.
Quality meats. All meat ingredients are high-quality fresh meats. There are no by-products or unnamed meats included.
Has artificial flavors. The formulation uses artificial flavors along with natural ones.
As far as our review of Friskies cat foods go, the Gravy Sensation line is by far the best one. There are plenty of proteins inside to satisfy the most meat-loving cat. And all of them are high-quality proteins that are from fresh and recognizable animal meat.
It’s a very balanced and nutritious meal that will make any pet parent proud to give their kitty. The only thing that perhaps mars the score (but only a little) is the use of artificial flavor in conjunction with natural ones.
The food comes in small 3-oz pouches but the price is about right. It’s still relatively cheap despite the premium ingredients used.
Food Topper & Treats
Friskies Lil' Soups With Sockeye Salmon in Chicken Broth
Friskies Lil' Soups With Sockeye Salmon in a Velvety Chicken Broth Food Complement & Topper is a great way to incorporate more moisture into your cat’s diet.
It contains real chicken and sockeye salmon served in flavorful chicken broth. This versatile soup can be served on its own as a snack or treat, or as a meal topper.
The first five ingredients of this salmon Lil’ Soups are chicken broth, chicken, sockeye salmon, tapioca starch, and powdered cellulose.
Perfect for seniors. Friskies Lil' Soups With Sockeye Salmon in a Velvety Chicken Broth has been a favorite among senior kitties.
These soupy treats are lickable so older cats enjoy having them as a snack that requires very little effort to consume. The meat bits are a breeze to eat as well.
Convenient packaging. This product from Friskies are packaged in small plastic cups. Simply peel the lid and serve to your feline friend. No more scooping from a can. It is also handy when traveling with your cat.
A bit costly. According to a handful of reviews, they find these food complements a bit too expensive for a small cup of soup and a few bits of meat.
Friskies Lil' Soups With Sockeye Salmon in a Velvety Chicken Broth is a great lickable treat that is sure to keep your cat hydrated. It is easy to eat and is loved by many cats, including senior kitties.
The packaging is convenient to as it is served in small plastic cups. However, this packaging is single-use plastic. Something that we prefer to avoid if we can. A few cat parents also find this product quite costly for a small cup of broth.
Friskies Party Mix Beachside Crunch
Friskies Party Mix Beachside cat treats offer good kitties a tasty reward for excellent behavior. The treats also make for an exciting snack with an interesting mix of different flavors and fun shapes.
The crunchy texture helps cats clean their teeth and give them a satisfying crunch with every little bite.
The first five ingredients are ocean whitefish, chicken meal, brewers rice, chicken by-product meal, and animal fat mixed with tocopherols.
Few calories. Reward your kitty guilt-free because each treat contains about 1.3 kcal only.
High in protein. Because the snacks are loaded with meat, the minimum crude protein level is at a high 29%.
First ingredient is animal protein. The recipe starts with ocean whitefish in the lead. Two other meat ingredients are listed in the first five slots of the ingredients label.
Has artificial flavors. Aside from natural flavor, the brand also uses artificial ones here.
Contains artificial colors. There are five artificial colors included, which aren’t necessary at all. Cats are not attracted to colors but to taste and smell.
There are many meat ingredients in this formulation aside from those listed in the first five of the list. All in all, there are six of them, including shrimp meal, crab meal, and tuna meal. Most cats would be quite happy to be a good kitty and behave when faced with these as rewards.
However, we have to wonder why there are so many artificial colors included. Cats are not partial to colors. Just their human owners are. The artificial colors are unnecessary and might even serve as allergy triggers for sensitive felines.
As a pioneer in the cat food industry, it is no wonder Friskies holds a fairly large share of the global cat food market. Their products are sold everywhere and are quite easy to find. Easily one of the most recognizable names in the market.
Numerous cats are fans of Friskies’ products. A lot of finicky cats will eat only a select few of their products and not any other food brand’s. With regard to taste and flavor, the brand has certainly captured the kitties’ favor.
They offer so many options for both dry and wet cat foods that your cat is sure to find at least one that she would like. Their wet food comes in so many flavors and textures. When it comes to variety, Friskies sure has something for every cat’s palette.
However, with regard to ingredients, not every cat parent is a fan. The use of corn, soy, wheat, and meat by-products is frowned upon by some cat owners. Artificial enhancers such as flavors and colors are also used.
Their wet food variants do offer some high protein options, which are great for cats who need to cut down on carbs. These high protein wet foods contain less carbohydrates than the average wet foods.
While they may not offer the absolute best when it comes to ingredients, it is important to note that Friskies’ products cost much lower than high-quality, grain free cat foods.
Its affordability makes it a popular choice among multiple cat households, shelters, and those who feed feral cat colonies. The Friskies pet food brand offers good value and makes cats happy and excited for their meals.
Overall, Friskies is a good brand if you are looking for economical cat food that is sure to make your cats happy. Their products are tasty, and a lot of their variants are gentle on cats’ tummies. They even have high protein wet cat food variants. It is affordable and liked even by picky cats.
Have Friskies cat foods ever been recalled?
Yes. In 2011, the brand’s Griller’s Blend variant was recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.
